PEM fuel cell systems
- PEM stack
- High energy density
- Emission-free
zepp.solutions is specialised in the development, production and integration of drop-in hydrogen fuel cell systems based on PEM stacks. Our PEM systems enable the emission-free propulsion and operation of any type of vehicle or other high power demand application without any drawbacks on uptime, cost or lifetime.
How do PEM fuel cells work?
A PEM hydrogen fuel cell system converts the chemical energy of a fuel (in this case: hydrogen) into electrical energy. At the heart of the system is the stack. A PEM fuel cell stack is made up of a number of individual fuel cells. Each fuel cell contains an anode and a cathode, separated by a thin proton exchange membrane. The anode and cathode sides each have a catalyst, usually platinum, which promotes the reaction between the hydrogen and oxygen.
When hydrogen passes through the anode, it is split into protons and electrons. The protons pass through the electrolyte membrane to the cathode, while the electrons flow through an external circuit, generating an electric current. At the cathode, the protons and electrons are recombined with oxygen from the air to form water – the only by-product of the reaction.
Advantages of PEM technology
A PEM fuel cell system offers a number of advantages over other types of fuel cells
- high power density
- quick start-up
- low operating temperature
PEM fuel cell systems are well suited to a wide range of applications, including automotive, maritime, material handling and energy backup systems. All fuel cell systems by zepp.solutions are based on PEM stack technology.

Advantages of hydrogen technology
Hydrogen fuel cell technology has several major advantages over alternatives like battery energy systems or conventional combustion engines. These key benefits are best shown in applications with the following characteristics:
- Long continuous operations
- High utilisation rates
- Fleet operations
- Low emission requirements
- Electrically powered operations in harsh environmental conditions
Our plug-and-play fuel cell systems are designed around PEM-stacks and can be considered drop-in modules. They are all-in-one packages, with integrated control systems, energy management systems, thermal control and a DCDC converter that can deliver directly to a battery of choice.
